EA shut down one of its most known services in two countries, and the players are screwed out of their games at the moment.
We don’t think we have to introduce Electronic Arts‘ Origin to you. However, we need to explain the situation: the digital storefront/DRM, after it’s 10 update, got shut down in Myanmar, and the same seemed to happen in Iran as well, making legally purchased Origin games inaccessible for the unfortunate players in these countries.
With the Myanmar „blackout”, it turned out that it became unavailable there after the new update due to US laws – it’s possible that both countries are under heavy sanctions, affecting the otherwise harmless and innocent players in the process. In the Far East country, the sanctions came into action on October 7, and Iran is possibly targeted since two weeks ago or so.
What was Electronic Arts’ response? On their forums, a spokesman came up with the usual „We are working to restore access to Origin for our players in Myanmar. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and we’ll share updates on timing as soon as possible” response. We’ll believe it when we see Origin being restored. Refunding? No word about that either!
Can a large company just pull a sneaky move such as banning their service without noticing the users, making them unable to access a service they paid for in the past? No wonder the internet is now rallying against EA…
