The American Nintendo-president has confirmed that the Switch will not act as a replacement for the 3DS. He also said why there are no pack-in games for the new platform.
Reggie Fils-Aime’s interview with Wired revealed that the six-year-old 3DS still has a long life in it, and it’s getting multiple games in the coming months. He also believes that the 3DS and the Switch can coexist on the market.
„You’re going to be meeting different price points, you’re going to be meeting different types of consumers, you’re going to have the newest, freshest content available on Nintendo Switch, you’ve got a thousand-game library available on Nintendo 3DS, plus some key new ones coming. They’re going to coexist just fine. We’ve done this before, managing two different systems,” Reggie said.
An interesting point to bring up is that during the Switch presentation, we didn’t see anything about portability for the new platform, although the reveal trailer in October focused on that point, too. Reggie says that the Switch is a home console in its heart with the possibility to take it with ourselves, although the hardware’s specs (NVidia Tegra chip – the manufacturer uses the same one for the Shield portable platform…) could quickly object his statement.
To GameSpot, he talked about why there are no packed-in games for the Switch. If they added a game in the box, the price would be higher. It’s already on the same level as the PlayStation 4 Slim, and the Xbox One S. The lack of games in the box would give the gamers the option to pick what they want… however, they will still end up paying extra in the end.
He also talked about why 1, 2, Switch didn’t end up as a pack-in title. Reggie thinks it’s much more of a substantial title (and thus, it offers more experiences) than say, Nintendo Land and Wii Sports on the Wii U and the Wii, respectively.
What he says is that they didn’t want to lose money on each sold Switch (which happened with the Wii U), so they took the game out of the box. The PS4 Pro has no 4K Blu-ray drive. What will be left out of the Xbox One Project Scorpio then…?
We can’t say anything for sure about this subject yet, but until then, have a look at the first advertisement for the Switch:
