Digital Foundry has taken another look at the next Microsoft console.
Microsoft went for a simple approach for the Project Scorpio: the developers should be able to utilize the console’s power without too much effort. However, this won’t be affecting the already available Xbox One games: some of them will be capable of running on 2160p (aka 4K) instead of 900p with a simple day-1 port, but others will need a bit of work. The 720p resolution titles can use checkerboard technology to upscale it to 4K.
Thanks to the 31% CPU boost, the developers can get another option: they could turn the 900p30 titles to 1080p60 on Project Scorpio, which would be a welcome addition for competitive games, such as FPS, simulator, and fighting titles. With the checkerboard, they could also focus on improving the visual quality.
The games running on Project Scorpio will have to (!) ask gamers to choose between performance and quality. They will also be able to record their games on 4K at 60 frames per second as well.
We can’t wait to see how the console will get revealed at E3. They should avoid the failure of the Xbox One presentation: sports, sports, TV, TV, sports… at least the devkit looks nice!
