Cliff Bleszinski‘s new game is in a tough situation.
CliffyB, who formerly worked on Gears of War, gave a detailed interview to GameSpot, where he talked about LawBreakers, which was developed by Boss Key. It’s available on PlayStation 4 and PC. He says it was a terrible idea to launch the game so close to Destiny, and he got humbled due to this situation – he shouldn’t be as much of a d_ck with his social interaction than before.
He didn’t want to directly compete against Overwatch, as he considers his game more adult than Blizzard’s. However, the launch backfired. Yesterday, according to SteamCharts, only 202 concurrent players were playing LawBreakers on PC, but Cliff thinks the PlayStation 4 version is „doing fine”: „”People cough up 30 bucks and hop online and they don’t overthink it,” Bleszinski says.
Due to the low player figures, matchmaking is taking long (or it doesn’t even work, as GameSpot tried for 45 minutes to no avail!), but patches, new game modes (such as Team Deathmatch, which was skipped at launch to not do what others do), and maps are coming. CliffyB thinks it’s still a marathon and not a sprint, and he brought up Digital Extreme’s Warframe as an example: it started out slowly, but due to the dev’s commitment with support, they got popular.
Bleszinski says that the new marketing campaign will help people understand what LawBreakers is about, but, quoting him here, „first and foremost, I have to keep the game alive.” He thinks getting into eSports is also a possibility.
CrowbCat’s video shows just how the hype killed the game right from the get-go.
