Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture Dev Team Lays Off People! Game Over?

The Chinese Room has to bid goodbye to a few developers.

The British team formerly developed Dear Esther, and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Their founder, Dan Pinchbeck, announced in a blog post that the team is now „going dark.”

Pinchbeck had a non-life threatening health issue in June, which made him think twice about his situation. The Chinese Room‘s new game, Let Us Melt’s end of development was marred by this problem, while they tried to get a new contract for the next game done via pitching games’ concepts. The result: the developer team was sent away, but it doesn’t mean The Chinese Room is dead!

They just go on a pause while being active on social media. Their games will still be available to purchase, and the team of three people (!) will continue to develop 13th Interior, formerly known Total Dark. They will expand when they have to. No more walking simulators, as he said on Eurogamer.

Pinchbeck said what we thought: The Chinese Room grew too fast, causing stress and burnout…

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
