The makers of Resogun, Super Stardust, and the recently launched Nex Machina, is moving on from the genre!
The latest blog post of Housemarque is called as is: „Arcade is dead”. The studio believes as such because while they tried their best (which resulted in critical success), their games just didn’t sell that well, which doesn’t allow them to continuously work on arcade games, even with Sony’s involvement (Resogun was available for free when the PlayStation 4 launched).
„Lackluster sales of Nex Machina have led us to the thinking that it is time to bring our longstanding commitment to the arcade genre to an end. While this genre will always hold a special place in our hearts, the industry is moving more toward multiplayer experiences with strong, robust communities, and it’s time for Housemarque to move forward with the industry. Hence Nex Machina and Matterfall will be the last of their kind coming out of our studio,” writes Ilari Kuittinen, the CEO of Housemarque.
For the team, the gameplay experience will remain the priority, which will also be applied to their new game, which is going to be „something different than what you might expect.”
Still, thank you for the games, and best of luck with the new title!
