The new Dragon Age‘s future looks a bit bleak at the moment…
Let’s recap the previous year of BioWare: after releasing Mass Effect: Andromeda (which didn’t reach the heights of the original trilogy), they confirmed that a new Dragon Age is in development, but one of the main people behind the franchise, Marc Laidlaw, left the company, and BioWare is focusing on Anthem at the moment to be capable of releasing it in early 2019. So far, it’s clear, but Laidlaw painted a darker future for Dragon Age to USGamer…
„I wanted to try a new challenge, and I knew that [the staff reassignments] would change the [Dragon Age 4] date. I was going to have a very small skeleton crew. I’m lucky because Patrick Weekes is an exceptional lead writer, Daniel Kading is an exceptional lead designer. There were two very veteran designers who could hold a vision. I thought if I’m ever gonna go, this is the least disruptive time for me to leave. So, I’d be stunned if whatever plan I had remained completely unchanged.”
Laidlaw also talked about what direction he would have gone for with the story: Solas, a key character in Dragon Age: Inquisition, would have been in the center. „There’s obviously a route to go with the Solas’ revelations. If you’ve played [the Dragon Age: Inquisition Trespasser DLC], you will know what logically will follow,” Laidlaw said.
So Dragon Age 4 will likely not be in development until Anthem is getting finished. If that game flops, BioWare might be killed by Electronic Arts. Let’s hope that it will not happen…
