Sony is slowly burying the PlayStation Vita…
In Japan, Sony announced the XMount, which allows users to connect their Xperia smartphones to a DualShock 4 controller, which makes Remote Play a possibility. (In case you have to visit the toilet in the middle of a boss fight, it should be the perfect device for you in case you don’t have a Vita…) Officially, the XMount supports the following Xperia models: XZ1, XZ1 Compact, XZ Premium, XZs, XZ, X Compact, X Performance, Z5, Z5 Compact, Z5 Premium.
The controller’s lightbar isn’t going to be obstructed, and you can connect your phone with a sliding bracket, allowing more stability, avoiding the possible scenarios of your smartphone falling on the ground, possibly breaking its display in the process. The design was handled by MSY, who previously worked together with companies such as Razer and Thrustmaster.
In Japan, the device will launch in June, and there’s no information about a Western release yet. If Sony is clever, they should allow all smartphones to be capable of Remote Play, but seeing how they don’t seem to even consider cross-play with Microsoft’s Xbox One, they are likely going to stick to their Xperia phones only…
So, is Sony slowly phasing out the Vita even in Japan, too? (It makes sense, though – the handheld launched there in late 2011…)
