Sony wants to expand on two separate fronts.
Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, talked at a financial earnings call that they have more profits from the PlayStation 4’s userbase and the expansion of the network revenue, and thus, they have to further expand their stable network services business model.
They realized that the software profitability peaks one year after the hardware peak, and Totoki believes there’s a momentum for the software (game) sales at the moment, and seeing how Sony’s network services (like the PlayStation Plus) are expanding; they have nothing to fear. Still, if you see PlayStation Store, PlayStation Plus, and PlayStation Now getting more deals often, it’s because they want to expand.
However, gaming isn’t limited to Sony Interactive Entertainment – Sony Music Entertainment also showed growth due to the iOS/Android game, Fate/Grand Order. In fact, 30% of the SME’s operating income was via mobile games. Therefore, Sony wants to continue the aggressive promotion for the mobile games to continue to leverage anime IPs (such as the game mentioned).
So, Sony is already looking at the mobile and network revenue, while they are working on the PlayStation 5.
