Sony got caught – there’s a little trick behind the re-release of the rapping dog.
On the GBATemp forums, a user called KiiWii wrote about how there’s a secret in the Parappa the Rapper remaster on the PlayStation 4: the game is no more than the PSP version, which came out in 2007, but it runs in an emulator with a 4K texture update!
The hackers (we know… this doesn’t suit the site itself, but they revealed Sony’s trick!) replaced the source files, and they were able to run other games, too: aside from the PSP development kit app, they could also boot other games on their PlayStation 4, such as Loco Roco, Patapon, and Namco Museum. However, the emulator has limitations: it can run just a few games, and it might not be able to emulate games bigger than 880 megabytes. (A little technical explanation: PSP’s UMD disc format could hold a maximum of 1.8 gigabytes if it were a dual-layer disc, or 900 megabytes if it was a single layer disc.)
So, Sony is tricking us a bit with their remasters (and Loco Roco could be another such example, and it’s already available on PlayStation 4), so it wouldn’t be surprising if they did something similar with the PS2 Classics. Maybe it’s time to sell PSP titles on the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 4…
