A few responses after the new Fallout game got announced.
What’s Rust? It’s Facepunch Studios’ multiplayer survival game which launched this year on Steam. Dennis Mejilones, a senior character artist at Bethesda Game Studios, who worked on Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, tried to stop she comparisons on Instagram: „Before you destroy your head, wait until you know more about it. Besides, I need more time to destroy humanity myself, so please be patient… I would hate for you to miss out. I think you will not be disappointed.”
Apparently, Fallout 76 is laying groundwork for Fallout 5 (!), with an upgraded Fallout 4 creation engine. It will have more focus on building and weapon improvisation than in 4, as well as a phone app (?!), and a limited modsupport (Creation Club…). It’ll have six factions, three of which will be familiar from previous games. Harold and Maxson will also make an appearance… and what caught our interest is that there will be a The Elder Scrolls announcement at E3! We didn’t find this topic on Reddit, but ActuGaming () saved the images.
Jason Schreier, who first revealed (unofficial) information about the game on Kotaku (we discussed it recently, too), supported Mejilones’ thoughts on Twitter: „I don’t think it’s a Rust clone or anything. I think it’s a unique multiplayer RPG inspired by all of those games (DayZ, Rust, Ark, etc.) with co-op and base-building, etc.” He also shut down our thoughts about it being a possible battle royale game: „It is not a battle royale game. It is multiplayer, but it’s still a BGS game – safe to expect a story, quests, etc.”
Referencing Rust is intentional, though: on 4chan, someone already knew about Fallout 76 at the end of December (!!!), and there was also a post about it almost three weeks before its announcement. On May 29, a post said that its map would be set next to an interstate highway.
The Verge reports that Fallout 76’s pre-announcement, 24-hour stream (with its Vault Boy figure and Please Stand By TV in the background) got Bethesda over two million unique viewers. The number was confirmed by Todd Howard, who is supposedly working on The Elder Scrolls VI at the moment: „We have had over two million unique visitors to this stream to watch, I don’t know what, nothing.”
TheYadda, a Redditor, also responded to the game’s announcement by promptly drinking an entire bottle of Tabasco. He bet on Fallout 3 getting remastered, and he lost the bet. It’s painful to see him drink a whole bottle of hot sauce!
