Atari VCS: What Is Under The Hood? [VIDEO]

While its campaign is running on Indiegogo with over a month remaining ant 2.25 million dollars achieved at this point, let’s see what the Atari VCS, which will support a 4K resolution, HDR, and 60 frames per second, will have under the hood.

It will be AMD-based, which can also be said about the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Bristol Ridge A10 CPU, Radeon R7 GPU, 4 GB of DDR4 RAM, 32 GB eMMC storage space which can be expanded with SD cards or external hard drives. The OS will be Ubuntu Linux-based, with a custom Atari-styled UI. Expect keyboard and mouse support, too.

The games will have chat support (no idea whether it will be available from launch or not – Skype, Discord…), but the new versions of Atari classics will offer online PvP multiplayer (Pong?), and those Steam games that run on Linux and could be run on the Atari VCS will also be supported.

A small technical list: HDCP 2.2, second display support, cloud support, streaming to Twitch, and the battery-using classic and modern controllers will both know Bluetooth and USB-C, and the latter might get a headset port as well.

The console will be manufactured by Flex, while the controllers will be made by PowerA. The price looks a little harsh, though: 200 bucks, while the Collector’s Edition will be 300 – during Days of Play, you could get a PlayStation 4 Pro for that much money! It better not end up like the OUYA did… (a 100-dollar mini Android console which got 8.5 million via crowdfunding; its controller cost 50 bucks, and the OUYA wasn’t capable of gaining ground, which meant it was sold to Razer in July 2015)

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
