The company behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has dropped the case against the company behind Fortnite (and the Unreal Engine that both games use).
The two battle royale games’ conflict started when PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds got a rival last summer out of nowhere: Fortnite also came as a free-to-play title available on platforms where PUBG isn’t (PlayStation 4, and also, the Nintendo Switch recently).
PUBG Corp. has dropped the lawsuit which they started because they considered Fortnite to be a clone of their game, and since they were in contact with Epic Games already because of the usage of Unreal Engine 4, they were worried that Epic could have accessed PUBG‘s assets to create Fortnite.
Bloomberg reports that PUBG Corp. sent a letter on Monday to Epic Games‘ lawyers to close the case, and the former company already confirmed it. However, we don’t know the reasoning behind the closure of the lawsuit yet.
There might be some money involved – Epic might be paying PUBG Corp. from their Fortnite profits to keep PUBG Corp. silent. Maybe we’re overcomplicating things…
