MOVIE NEWS – Also, TV series might start sooner, then expected.
When an adaptation is made, from a video game to another medium or vice versa, the alterations to the original material are inevitable. However, sometimes those creative freedoms go beyond what the fans would like. Such could be the case of The Witcher‘s television series because, according to an audition announcement by the National Youth Theater (in the United Kingdom), Netflix‘s production is looking for a young actress between 15 and 16 years old, with Afro, Asian or other ethnic descent, to play Ciri.
According to the paper’s description, he is looking for “an extraordinary young talent to star in the series; someone with a brave heart and really special qualities “to represent a resilient, implacable, arrogant character that will develop continuously. While the personality traits are accurate, Ciri‘s skin colour would be different from what is shown in video games and even in the novel by Andrezj Sapkowski, where the heroine is racially white.
A few days ago it was revealed that Henry Cavill, known for his role as Superman in recent films, will be the one who plays Geralt de Rivia in the Netflix series, something that caused a stir and countless reactions on the Internet. It will be interesting if the choice for Ciri is radically different from what we have seen so far, or if the changes make sense. Surely we will know the final decision in the next weeks because the shooting of The Witcher begins the following month.
It seems that picking the right actor for The Witcher might have sped up the series’ creation behind the scenes.
In other news, the Lauren S. Hissrich, the showrunner of the series, announced something else on Twitter.
She revealed that the series would start in 2019! Indeed – despite looking like a good 1-1.5 years away to see The Witcher get off the ground, we were wrong, so we’d gladly eat that humble pie. It’s a surprising announcement, however.
„The Witcher Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts,” Netflix‘ synopsis says. That sounds promising, doesn’t it?
Although we don’t know the exact start date yet, a 2019 year has now been confirmed.
