American McGee finally seems to be serious about developing a prequel to one of his games.
McGee, who started out as a tester for Wolfenstein 3D, quickly became a level designer (Doom, Quake 1-2), but in 2000, he was already a creative director, designer, and co-writer of American McGee‘s Alice. Later, he worked on Scrapland, Bad Day L.A., Grimm, and Alice: Madness Returns, to name a few. The fans demanded an Alice sequel, and while McGee said about 1.5 years ago that it’s Electronic Arts’ decision (as they published the first two Alice games), now, it seems to be happening after several years.
American McGee‘s blog is saying the following: „American is hard at work on design, art, and story for the next chapter in Alice’s adventures. Alice: Asylum will present the story before American McGee’s Alice, with young Alice fighting through the trauma of losing her family.” On Facebook, he also talked about potentially setting up a dev studio in Thailand, which would also be „a vacation destination for Alice fans.” He also has a Patreon, where the fans’ monthly donations would be used for the game’s „pre-production.” A wiki is also being made, and it seems this new game is set to launch in 2021 on „all major platforms and PC.”
Eight years after Alice: Madness Returns (which in turn was released 11 years after the first game!), American McGee might finally work on a new game, which seems to be taken seriously by the things we have seen. Is the project going to be an EA Originals title? Electronic Arts releases indie games under this label (first they launched A Way Out from movie director turned game director Josef „F__k The Oscars!” Fares, and the next game, Sea of Solitude, is coming in February or so).
