TECH NEWS – Google’s video sharing website is going to check those videos that are labelled as spreading misinformation.
YouTube is currently testing a feature in India which shows an information panel in the search results, and these facts are provided by YouTube‘s fact-checking partners in English and Hindi language. YouTube has struck a deal with about six companies that have been doing the same thing with Facebook, too. In other words, the site tries to stop people from spreading fake news altogether.
„As part of our ongoing efforts to build a better news experience on YouTube, we are expanding our information panels to bring fact checks from eligible publishers to YouTube,” a YouTube spokesperson told BuzzFeed. Here’s an example of this panel: no, there is no virus in paracetamol. And you can see how this is rated false, too.
The videos themselves will not be affected, but this feature will display if said video is misleading or if it contains fake information. We could call this censorship, as a bigger tech company will try telling you what’s right and what’s not – but if it’s used correctly, it could work. The situation might be interesting it starts to tap into politics.
We’ll be curious to see this feature when it rolls out worldwide. We wouldn’t like to predict when it will happen, though…
