Daedalic Entertainment (who previously developed the Deponia or The Dark Eye-series, and they have published many other titles) announced that they are working on a The Lord of the Rings game which focuses on Gollum (or you might know him as Sméagol). It is a very bold move, but – as we have said many times before – human creativity knows no boundaries…
Genre-wise, The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum will be an action-adventure title, and it will predate the movies and films. He will already have the One Ring, though. This title will be the first after the Daedalic Entertainment and Middle-earth Enterprises deal was signed. The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum might be the beginning, as there are future plans for other games as well, meaning Tolkien’s work might see even further derivation.
The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum, which is going to use the Unreal Engine, is set to launch in 2021 on PC, as well as „all relevant consoles platforms at the time,” meaning it will likely target the next-gen PlayStation, the next-gen Xbox, and the stronger Nintendo Switch that was rumoured earlier this week. (Also, maybe the Google Stadia as well.)
We’ll see what it becomes. Carsten Fitchelmann, the CEO of Daedalic, says they do not want to go „too deep into the uncanny valley” by making hyper-realistic games…
