The Last Of Us Part II’s Multiplayer Will Be Separate; Naughty Dog Responds [VIDEO]

The developers of Naughty Dog explained why they had finally decided not to do Factions mode in the next The Last of Us.

„We wanted to address multiplayer in The Last of Us Part II. As we’ve stated, the single-player campaign is far and away the most ambitious project Naughty Dog has ever undertaken. Likewise, as development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us Part I, the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single-player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Last of Us Part II would not include an online mode. However, you will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II. When and where it will be realized is still to be determined. But rest assured, we are excited to share more when it’s ready. We are as big a fan of Factions as the rest of our community,” Naughty Dog says. It means that AT LAUNCH, The Last of Us Part II will NOT have online! (Hey, even Red Dead Redemption 2 did that last year – Red Dead Online launched at a later date…)

„I will say: one, we’re not discussing the fate of any characters, that’s just a general policy. I think the best way for us to honour these characters whatever their background or orientation is, is just to tell their story in a nuanced way, to find their complexity, to show how interesting their relationships can be. So here, for example, with Dina you got to see her being capable, you go to see her being vulnerable, you got to see her being awkward. And the other thing that’s important for this story and the state of the world is for you to understand the stakes that we’re dealing with, that anybody’s life is at risk. And we want you going into this game to believe that anybody’s life is at risk – including the character you’re playing yourself, meaning Ellie. Including Joel. Including Dina. Including all the other cast of characters. That’s important to us,” Neil Druckmann, the game’s director and co-writer, told The Telegraph.

The Last of Us Part II, set twenty-five years after the outbreak, featuring a much more agile Ellie that is now a clone of Nathan Drake (climbing, crawling, jumping will all be possible), will be on two Blu-ray discs, and it will launch on February 21. A developer diary, and other gameplay videos from the September 24 press event, plus images, follow.
