The PlayStation 5 Might Start With A Significant Game Library

If this rumour is true, then we will have a lot to play in about a year or so on PlayStation 5.

Backwards game compatibility is something that we have seen to an extent previously: the PlayStation 2 supported many PS1 discs, one of the PS3 early versions played both PS1 and PS2 CDs and DVDs, and the Xbox 360 also ran some games of the original Xbox as well. Since then, the Xbox One is focusing on this, too. The next-gen consoles (Xbox Project Scarlett, PlayStation 5) will concentrate on this far more than before – we have heard about it from Microsoft (we wrote about it, too), but Sony doesn’t seem to be that talkative aside from playing PlayStation 4 games on the PlayStation 5. (Some of their patents went further, though – we discussed this subject in the past.)

„Do not dispose of, trade or sell your PlayStation®, PlayStation®2, PlayStation®3 or PlayStation®4 games,” PSErebus, who seems to be an insider, wrote on Twitter. With this tweet, this person is hinting at that the PlayStation 5 could NATIVELY support the history of PlayStation, which seems to be in line with Sony’s patents. PSErebus has previously talked about the release date of The Last of Us Part II, so there might be truth behind this information, too.

What does it all mean? Sony might want to reach complete backwards compatibility, so if you have some PS2 discs in the attic, you might be able to plonk them into your PlayStation 5 and play them. Of course, there is no official announcement of this yet, so take it with a grain of salt, because frankly, it seems too good to be true. Although Patrick Klepek, one of the writers of Vice, talked about it before…

Let’s also not forget about how Sony is focusing on strengthening the PlayStation Now (the other day, we discussed a controller that is copying the approach that Google Stadia has…), and there might be streaming involved here as well… but PSErebus also talked about trading games. That’s something we do with physical copies. Hmmm…
