Another event happened in Epic Games’ popular battle royale Fortnite game.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is going to hit the cinemas shortly, and its director, J.J. Abrams, played an exclusive clip of it in the Risky Reels, Fortnite’s drive-in cinema. After airing the clip, a lightsaber duel also happened.
The event, which was delayed by ten minutes due to high interest, started by Abrams (who even had an avatar that looked like him) arriving with the Millenium Falcon while there was some fight going on between the TIE fighters and the Star Destroyers. After a brief chat with Geoff Keighley (The Game Awards host and producer), a floating display aired the clip of the movie, featuring Rey, Finn, and Poe. After that, Abrams flew away in his space ship, but people could hear Darth Sidious’ voice over about the day of the Sith, while the players could choose their favourite lightsaber colour. (You can fling them as weapons now in the game, too.)
Fortnite already started hyping Star Wars in November by adding stormtrooper skins into the game. This week, Rey, Finn, and a new Sith trooper-based skin also showed up. There are also Star Wars-themed challenges for the players, via which they can acquire several items, such as a Jedi training emote. Each player that attended the event got a free TIE fighter that they could use as a glider. There’s also a double XP weekend now.
It’s not the first example of Fortnite collaborating with major franchises, as John Wick or the Avengers both got similar treatment. In February, Marshmello, a musician, performed a concert within Fortnite (and Epic Games claims over ten million players watched it, with several more millions tuning in via YouTube or Twitch).
