Shuhei Yoshida, who previously was the president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, told the Dengeki PlayStation magazine how easy it is to develop for the PlayStation 5.
In the interview, Shu revealed that the hardest platform in Sony’s history to develop for was the PlayStation 3 (which makes sense: the Cell processor made things complicated, but by the end of the generation, the devs got the hang of it, see The Last of Us), but they learned from their mistakes, and thus, they made things easier for the developers. He believes that the developers cannot focus on their game creation if the complicated hardware provides difficulty for them, which they might not even overcome. They used this approach with the PlayStation 4, and they took it to the next level on the PlayStation 5. He added that multiple developers told him that they never worked on a console as easy to develop on as the PS5. (We have to add that Shu’s new position is to be a link between Sony and the indie developers, meaning he has insight into the games’ development.)
So far, only one game was announced for the PlayStation 5. It is Borderlands-famed Gearbox Software’s Godfall. (Microsoft also has a single announced title for the Xbox Series X at the moment: it’s Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, although we wrote that it is also coming to the PC. However, Gearbox isn’t a studio that tends to work on exclusives, so Godfall could also be either multiplatform or a timed exclusive.)
The PlayStation 5 is going to launch in the next holiday season. Its price and release date are unknown at the moment, but there have been multiple rumours of a February PlayStation event. We’re going to see if it’s true or not shortly.
