PlayStation News: What Did We Learn At CES?

Sony held its keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES for short), which wasn’t much of an insight to the future as Sony touted it to be.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed the PlayStation 5‘s logo:

They kept what’s been here since the PlayStation 3, just replacing the number to five. There are no surprised here. Sony has also re-confirmed the functions and features they already mentioned about the PlayStation 5: 3D audio, haptic/adaptive triggers on the controller that is yet to be officially named the DualShock 5, ultra-high-speed SSD, hardware-based ray tracing, and a UHD Blu-ray drive.

„We’ve announced several key features of the PlayStation 5 hardware, which has been engineered with customizations that will truly differentiate the platform, including future-proof technology such as the ultra-high-speed SSD, 3D audio, ultra HD Blu-ray, and a brand new controller with haptics and adaptive trigger buttons. With that foundation, PlayStation 5 will inspire developers to create expansive worlds with new gameplay experiences that are more immersive than ever before in how they look, sound, and feel.

Our promise to the 100 million-strong PlayStation community is to offer the biggest and best in content. And to deliver unique experiences to gamers with unprecedented speed. There’s much more to share about PlayStation 5 in the months ahead, and we look forward to revealing more details, including the content that will showcase the platform and the future of gaming. Community is the bedrock of how we grow our company and it’s why our brand is so beloved. It’s that promise that the PlayStation brand was built on 25 years ago, and we will continue our mission to bring that to players all around the world,” Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan said.

Sony also talked about the success of PlayStation during its keynote. The PlayStation 4 sold 106 million units, which means the PS4 has surpassed the great-grandfather PS1’s 102.49-million lifetime sales. The PlayStation 4 had 1.15 billion games sold, meaning on average, a PS4 got an average of 11 games rounded up. The PlayStation VR also got new sales information: five million VR-headsets were sold. The PlayStation Network has 103 million monthly active users (about 97% of the PS4 sales total), and Sony has 38.8 million PlayStation Plus subscribers (about 37.6% of the PSN’s monthly active users, that’s not that strong).

„I am very pleased to see that so many PlayStation fans value the unparalleled entertainment experience on PlayStation 4. This has been made possible by the support we have from our partners and fans since launching PlayStation in 1994, and I would like to truly thank everyone. We’ve consistently delivered innovative products like PlayStation VR, which has reached its five million unit sales milestone. There is much more entertainment experience to look forward to that the PlayStation ecosystem will provide that we can’t wait to share with our fans,” Ryan said in a press release.

So that’s all she wrote – the company didn’t say much NEW about the PlayStation 5 aside from its logo, but this fuels those rumours that say the PS5 could get a reveal event in February. (The PlayStation 4 also had a reveal event in… what a surprise, February of 2013…)
