Seriously, why doesn’t Konami re-release the older Silent Hill games on PC?
Silent Hill 2 came out in 2001 on PlayStation 2, followed by an Xbox port a few months later – Europe had to wait for the latter version until 2002, but by then, the PC version of James Sunderland’s story was just a few months away (and that already was the Director’s Cut version, which included the Born from a Wish side story, featuring Maria, one of the main characters of the plot). One of the best survival horror games got a PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 version as well in Silent Hill HD Collection, but let’s say it wasn’t good…
Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition wants to improve and fix the old (but still gold) game, as it had a few issues that stayed in the PC version after the console iterations had them. We can see some graphical improvements, such as soft shadows, self shadows, restored post-processing effects, and there’s also proper controller support, meaning it should rumble like a heartbeat, just as it is supposed to. There are also smaller, unnecessary details included, such as changing the PC cursor to the one used in Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill 4: The Room. There is more blood (just as much as on the PS2), and even the joke ending with the dog (we’re not saying more than that…) has been fixed: the monitors are no longer blank, as they now show security footage. We can go as far and say that the result is better than what we saw in the HD Collection…
You can find the installation instructions and the mod on this page. You’ll need either the North American or the European version of Silent Hill 2 Director’s Cut. (Once again, we ask: wouldn’t Konami get cash by making the PC versions of these games more accessible?)
