Yoshinori Kitase has not forgotten Aya Brea. (And neither did we.)
The first Parasite Eve launched in 1998 on PlayStation, except in Europe, as there was no PAL version made. It was a sequel to a sci-fi horror novel called Parasite Eve, written by Hideaki Sena, and published in 1995. The game was excellent, so no wonder Square continued it – Parasite Eve II followed in late ’99 in Japan, late August 2000 in Europe (why release the second game without the first one?) and mid-September in North America. It replaced the tactical combat system with a real-time solution. The third game in the series was a spin-off TPS on the PSP in 2010/2011 – 3rd Birthday barely had any links to the previous events, and… let’s just say the game wasn’t good.
Let’s talk about the interview below. It is conducted by Kenny Omega, a Canadian-born Japanese pro wrestler (who also happens to be a big Square Enix fan), and he asked a few questions from Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of Final Fantasy VII Remake. „So I know you worked on the 3rd Birthday, and, I guess my question is, would you like to see more of Parasite Eve in the future,” Omega asked. Here’s Kitase’s reply: „Yes, I indeed worked on 3rd Birthday. The characters are very rich and deep, especially Aya Brea. I don’t know of any plans right now, but it would be a waste not to use those characters.”
Omega added, „Horror games are very popular right now, and Parasite Eve had some RPG elements to it. It was very original and unique…so I think now is a good time.” And he has a point: look at the success of Resident Evil 2 Remake. Mitochondria. For everybody!
And why not? If Final Fantasy VII Remake will sell well (and the name alone might do it…), then Square Enix might follow Capcom – they tend to remake their previous games, and Resident Evil 3 Remake will launch in early April, just a week before the timed PlayStation 4-exclusive Final Fantasy VII Remake.
