Nintendo PlayStation – The prototype was sold for so much money that we can’t imagine at first…
So, we previously wrote about the last, functional Nintendo PlayStation prototype – it’s a memento from an era when Nintendo and Sony worked together, serving as a „what if the two companies made consoles together?” item. This console was put up for bidding at Heritage Auctions. When we wrote about it, the highest bidder at the moment was Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus.
Since then, nearly a month has passed, and the bidding is over. The winning bid for the Nintendo PlayStation’s prototype was 350 thousand dollars. There were 57 bids on the console whose 199 brothers’ situation is unknown (allegedly 200 prototypes were made, and we have no clue what happened to the other 199). We don’t know the winner, and it’s likely not Palmer Luckey. He said it himself back then that he doesn’t understand how he keeps getting outbid.
A lot of people asked him if he won the bid on Twitter. The issue is that he did not give anyone a clear yes or no answer. One person got the following question as a response:
„Do you imagine there are rich people out there who are better than me at preserving video game technology?”
It sounds a bit sarcastic and angry.
An Ars Technica writer asked him to give a clear response. Here’s what Luckey wrote:
„You and your employer spread totally fabricated defamatory lies about me and shamelessly refuse to correct them. That is my comment.”
We’re not going to take sides here – it is not our issue after all…
So the Nintendo PlayStation prototype now has a new owner, and we have to wait until we learn who it is. (If it even happens.) In the worst case, a rich person bought it only for it to collect dust in a corner of a room…
