A studio that has been working on Nintendo Switch ports of PlayStation 4, Xbox One games believes that even next-gen titles could be getting „N versions.”
Virtuos is not a terrible studio when it comes to porting games over to the Nintendo Switch. Dark Souls: Remastered, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age – a few examples of their work on the portable hybrid platform. They are also working on the Switch version of The Outer Worlds (which should arrive on June 5, about eight months after the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC getting Obsidian’s game).
„We believe that 2020 will be the year of game-centric development, where players will expect as standard a consistency with their favourite games. With the launch of the new Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 this year, developers need to strategise and plan for the game experience to be consistent across all platforms. At Virtuos, we are charged up and full of talent ready to help bring these new games to the Nintendo Switch,” Virtuos’ Elijah Freeman claims.
Whatever happens, it will be a mighty task for them. Sure, we have seen some unbelievable examples (The Witcher 3’s Nintendo Switch port is such an example, although it was made by Saber Interactive and not Virtuos), but still, porting a game made ONLY for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will be more difficult than bringing a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One title over to the big N’s successful hybrid console. The newer consoles will get games with more performance, and if those don’t get a current-gen (PS4/X1) versions, then they will have to make compromises.
We’ll see. Virtuos is hopeful, and we have our doubts – they can make us eat the humble pie, though.
