History repeats itself. Once again. We’ve seen something similar in 2013 already.
FIFA 21‘s announcement was not surprising, as Electronic Arts is getting a ton of cash via the Ultimate Team mode, so they would never skip a year with their sports titles, although this year, the coronavirus global pandemic might have been a bothersome factor in the development, as the release date seems to be a bit later than usual. (Also, will the stadiums be empty? That would be realistic. Or are we dreaming big here?)
In FIFA 21, Electronic Arts is going for „player humanization,” possibly meaning more authenticity for the players. They might celebrate their goals harder, and they could also be slightly angrier if things don’t go right (or if they get a penalty). The Origin Access subscribers can access the game „days” before the game’s release day (we don’t know the exact period here…), and if the PC users buy the game on Origin and not on Steam, they will get a 10% discount. We continue after the announcement trailer.
PC users will get the short end of the stick. When the game got announced at EA Play Live, EA focused on the next-gen (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X) version. Let’s quote the game’s official Q&A: „FIFA 21 on PC will be the same version as released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. We’ll have more information on it in the coming weeks.”
So we’ll see the same thing as in 2013. Back then, FIFA 14’s PC version was the same as what the PS3 and the X360 received. Before that, the situation was even worse. FIFA on PC until 2009’s FIFA 10 (!!!) was based on the PlayStation 2 version of the game. FIFA 11 finally made the jump to the next generation, although by then, both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 have been out for years.
FIFA 21 will launch on October 9 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and possibly the Nintendo Switch, where we’ll possibly see another Legacy Edition roster patch release… while the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X versions will possibly be a launch title for each console. If you buy the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One version, you can upgrade to the next-gen version for free.
