The Last Of Us Part II: Good Sales, But No DLC?

Was there anyone who’d have doubted that this game will break records?

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced on the PlayStation Blog that Naughty Dog‘s game, which saw a worldwide simultaneous release on June 19, has become the fastest-selling PlayStation 4-exclusive by reaching four million sales by June 21.

„We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity—whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar. The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog. We can imagine no greater honour than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone,” Neil Druckmann, the vice president of Naughty Dog, and the co-lead writer and director of The Last of Us Part II wrote.

On Twitter, an industry insider, Benji-Sales added that even in Japan, The Last of Us Part II broke records: on the launch week, 178696 copies were sold there, beating the previous record-holder for Sony (although this title was a second-party exclusive by FromSoftware, not an SIE-developed game), Bloodborne. So in three days, nearly 60 thousand copies per day on average. Keep in mind that it only includes PHYSICAL sales!

And on the newest Kinda Funny Gamecast, Druckmann said there are no plans for DLC for The Last of Us Part II, although the first game did get one (Left Behind). What about the Factions multiplayer mode, which has been rumoured to still be in development? „I remember when we used to make multiplayer games,” Druckmann replied, implying they stopped working on multiplayer modes. And he said nothing else.

The Last of Us Part II launched on June 19, exclusively on PlayStation 4, but we wouldn’t rule out something on the PlayStation 5, too. After all, the first game launched late in the PS3’s cycle in 2013, which is why it got a Remastered version on PS4, with the Left Behind DLC included.
