The free PlayStation 5 upgrades will also apply to used physical PlayStation 4 titles.
A Sony Interactive Entertainment representative told GameSpark, a Japanese website that the used PlayStation 4 titles will also be allowed to offer the free PlayStation 5 upgrade, meaning you don’t have to buy the next-gen version of the game (Cyberpunk 2077 for example). This sounds promising. However, the representative could not confirm if we need the PlayStation 4 disc to access the free upgrade. (This was previously the case with the PlayStation 3 -> PlayStation 4 upgrades, making the question reasonable.)
GameSpark also asked about the backwards compatibility. However, SIE’s rep did not reveal anything new. The person didn’t answer the question regarding full compatibility. (In other words, we don’t know yet if the PlayStation 5 will also support the first three PlayStation generations’ titles or not.) This sounds suspicious: there were rumours in October that every PlayStation game will run natively on the new hardware (and thus, not using PlayStation Now to stream them), and since Sony did not deny the comment, it might be happening.
Keep in mind that Sony doesn’t have detailed, corporate plans for PlayStation 5 upgrades – at Microsoft, this would be Smart Delivery. Then again, Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has said that it’s time for the players to give experiences that only the PlayStation 5 can offer (meaning there will NOT be any first-party, SIE-developed cross-gen games). This is why Sony allows the publishers to decide whether they will offer the free next-gen upgrade or not. Bungie joined CD Projekt RED, so they will offer Destiny 2’s next-gen version for those who own the current-gen one.
The PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (the latter omits the Blu-ray drive) will launch this Holiday season.
