Ubisoft And Sexual Harassment, And Its Solution

Ubisoft is working on a new tool that they hope will put an end to the recently reported phenomenon of sexual harassment within their company.

With the new online tool, any Ubisoft employee could report harassment, abuse, sexism anonymously. This is how Ubisoft tries to maintain its reputation.

The French company and the whole industry leaves one hell of a week behind them. The company is facing a series of allegations that sexual abuse is rampant within its walls.

Following a rather superficial statement, Ubisoft suspended two of its executives. According to Gamasutra, the company is preparing to set up a new council that would deal specifically with similar issues.

According to an internal letter published by Gamasutra, it was decided to set up a working group covering the whole range of this issue, the aim and task of which will be to impartially detect and eliminate abuses within the company. As a previous report said, an also impartial third party group will assist in these investigations.

“I have gathered all of my direct reports to address this subject and your feedback. I would like us to thoroughly review all of our systems so that these types of situations cannot happen again,” – The company’s director, Yves Guillemot, wrote in an email to the staff.

Cecile Cornet, Chief Talent & Communications Officer said the investigations could take anywhere from two weeks to two months, depending on the nature of the case, stressing that details would in no way be disclosed to the public to keep the secrets of both parties.

So Ubisoft is now looking at its own ways to resolve the situation.

“Some of these investigations end in sanctions (warnings with required training, suspensions, dismissal), while others prove groundless. I hear the need for greater transparency, and one of the ways we will do that is by better tracking and sharing indicators on where we stand.” -Cornet wrote.

Perhaps the most shocking sexual harassment case of the past week has been attributed to legendary video game writer and designer Chris Avellone. We hope that the industry will be able to eradicate this terrible phenomenon. Ubisoft has now taken another step in this direction, and perhaps others will follow suit.
