It looks like the music from Ghost of Tsushima will be available in both digital and physical form upon release.
Two composers have also worked on the music for the PS4-exclusive game. As the game is coming soon, let’s see what we learned about his music thanks to a post on the PlayStation blog:
The information comes from Rev. Dr. Bradley D Meyer, audio director at Sucker Punch Production. As he said in the early stages of game development, the team temporarily used music from their favorite movies, series, or other games that inspired them to create the game so they could convey the atmosphere they would want for their new game.
The music of Ilan Eshkeri and Shigeru “Ume” Umebayashi stood out the most.
Eshkeri has been responsible for the music of several films, including the melodies of 47 Ronin. Umebayashi also worked on a lot of soundtracks that the team really liked. It was obvious that they had to be invited for the duration of a joint project, so Sucker Punch Productions immediately put two on the works instead of one composer.
“Ghost of Tsushima is BIG. There is a lot of content and we knew we would need a lot of music to fill the world and support the evolution of Jin’s journey from samurai to the Ghost.”
”Secondly, when done properly, having multiple voices sculpting the score can weave a more diverse and elaborate musical tapestry for the game’s story and action to sit upon.”
Eshkeri talked about what it was like to be involved in the creative work:
“From the first moment of the first meeting, I realised that Ghost was about a very powerful emotional journey.” – he said.
“Jin’s theme, “The Way of the Ghost,” was one of the very first pieces I wrote. […] It’s all about how the people of Tsushima see him. He is their hero: strong, infallible, inspiring and full of hope, but what really fascinated me about Jin is the contrast of what is going on inside him. In order to save his home and the people he loves he must go against everything he was taught to believe in and break the code of the Samurai.”
And as far as Umebayashi is concerned, he has composed his latest work around keywords, around feelings and events that Jin will experience throughout the story, like Serenity, Occupation, Exile, Haunting, and Sanctuary.
The composer shared that he had grown up next to Tsushima Island, but he himself had never been there before.
“When I was composing music for the game, I was inspired by Japan’s nature, climate, traditional lifestyle, and classical Japanese music.” He says, “When listeners hear the music for the game, I hope that they feel the hearts of the people of Tsushima”
They have worked on the music in several studios around the world. The final music will be composed around the intensity of the situation, the actions of the player and the given difficulty, dynamically.
The game’s music will be released digitally and physically on July 17 on two discs. In addition to these, a vinyl record with the song ‘The Way of the Ghost’ performed by Clare Uchima will arrive later.
The game will be released on PlayStation 4 on July 17th.
