Netflix have also revealed information about the plot of the Witcher series and what we can expect from it: it won’t be as confusing as before.
With filming for the second season getting closer, The Witcher on Netflix continues to offer details of what we can find in this new round of Geralt’s adventures on television. Although the first season received positive reviews and was reportedly viewed by 76 million people, it was also criticized by fans for its intricate stories and non-linear timeline. Its showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has recently spoken about the improvements they are going to make and a tone much closer to the video games they are going to adopt.
While Netflix has not confirmed new details of the plot, it seems likely that the series will continue to take references from its original material, the Andrzej Sapkowski books, and the three video games it inspired.
Hissrich has confirmed that “the stories will be told in a much more linear way. However, not all the characters will be part of it, the paths can be separated”, she said referring to Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer.
“I think the kind of family that Geralt and Ciri make is really fun. You have a warlock whose only job is to kill monsters for money and you have a girl who is trying to escape her past. Now we can see what happens when two people who are completely different have to join by obligation.” This suggests that much of the second season will focus on the role of the protagonist as Ciri’s “father” and the move from being lonely to being a member of a family.
The Witcher series on Netflix: “If we can wink at video games, we will”
These details would bring the plot closer to video games, where the relationship of both characters ends up being defined, but they would remain faithful to the books.
This has been recognized by the showrunner: “We love games. Obviously, we wanted to go to the original material, not make an adaptation of an adaptation. But it does not mean that we are not fans of the games and we know that a large part of our audience has only heard of The Witcher from them. If we can wink or gesture whenever we can, we will.”
A month ago, Netflix revealed the identity of a new witcher who will be in the cast this new season and who will join other companions of the protagonist in his monster hunt. Despite the narrative change and the more emotional tone of the plot, its creator has ensured that the magic, the action and all the aura that surrounds the adventures of the character will continue to be present in this second season.
