Warner’s video game arm might not be in new hands after all.
There were previous rumours about how AT&T, the owner of the company, along with WarnerMedia, is eyeing to sell the games division, which isn’t something that anyone can afford, as it’s estimated to be worth no less than four billion dollars. The new owner (which could have been Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, or Take-Two Interactive) could have acquired Travellers Tales, NetherRealm Studios, or Rocksteady Games. (Not to mention WB Montreal, who have yet to reveal what they are working on; Rocksteady has confirmed to develop a Suicide Squad game!)
With the acquisition, the DC Comics licenses would have not been transferred to the new owner, which makes sense. That’d require even more cash or at least a solid deal between DC and the new owner. Deadline reports that WarnerMedia has gone through some restructuring in key personnel, and a refocus for the company. Let’s see a particular quote from the report: „The Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group continues to be led by Chairman Toby Emmerich. Warner Bros. Television Studios group continues to be led by Chairman Peter Roth. Warner Bros. Interactive remains part of the Studios and Networks group, along with our Global Brands and Franchises team including DC led by Pam Lifford, and our Kids, Young Adults and Classics business led by Tom Ascheim, all focused on engaging fans with our brands and franchises through games and other interactive experiences.”
This last sentence has the key quote: engaging through games. Why would they focus on the video game arm of Warner if they wanted to sell it all together? That sounds like Warner is not going anywhere. Even if it’s not official (yet?), it looks plausible. So, it seems everything is going to stay as-is.
