Naughty Dog‘s game wasn’t good solely in the past two months but retroactively in the past 25 years when it comes to sales.
After several delays, Naughty Dog’s game was released on June 19, exclusively on PlayStation 4. That month, according to the US’ NPD Group, was won by The Last of Us Part II by a landslide, so Sony’s exclusive outsold the competition.
In July, the game slid off the podium, as in the United States, Ghost of Tsushima was the best-seller (making Sony lead another month with a different PlayStation 4-exclusive), followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (one of the biggest Nintendo Switch-exclusive titles), and The Last of Us Part II, taking the fourth position on the list.
However, NPD’s analysis says that the life-to-dollar sales of The Last of Us Part II is so good that the game is now Sony’s third-highest in the company’s history. Only Marvel’s Spider-Man (September 2018) and God of War (April 2018) are in front of Ellie’s adventures. It’s not a weak result, and since the gaming industry continues to grow, Sony’s throne may be taken by Naughty Dog’s game that will also likely show up on the PlayStation 5 because of it.
Here’s 2020’s top 10 in the United States so far:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo Switch)
- The Last of Us Part II (PlayStation 4)
- Final Fantasy VII Remake (PlayStation 4)
- Ghost of Tsushima (PlayStation 4)
- Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
- MLB: The Show 20 (PlayStation 4)
- Resident Evil 3 Remake
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo Switch)
- Mortal Kombat 11
There’s still a long way to improve, but The Last of Us Part II may slide off the podium, as the new Call of Duty (which might be called Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War) will start on five platforms out of the box (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC), resulting in a higher reach.
