If you thought that the obligatory Facebook account was a random idea… oh, you are wrong.
A few days ago, we heard about how in 2023, you can no longer do anything with an Oculus Account. Facebook’s VR/AR devices (virtual reality, augmented reality, they are often put under one name, XR, extended reality) will do nothing in three years if you do not have a Zuckerberg account, The Verge reports. It means that Oculus users will all be forced to get a Facebook account over time.
A blog post revealed that Facebook’s rebranded its internal AR/VR studio from Oculus to Facebook Reality Labs. They also made some minor changes, all to eventually fold the Oculus branding directly into Facebook. (They are going away from Palmer Luckey’s name. He founded Oculus, and when he gave the keys of the company to Facebook, he said that this Facebook account thing wouldn’t happen.) What’s the reasoning behind this? „To encompass the expansive work being done at Facebook as we build the next computing platform to help people feel more present with each other, even when we’re apart.” That’s what we call PR (we wrote VR by reflex…) talk.
They further emphasized in the post that the expansion of its Facebook Reality Labs brand to encompass not just its research division, but all of Oculus, is a necessary component of furthering its AR and VR development capabilities. They also mentioned that the annual Oculus Connect event (where they tend to share updates about their developments) to Facebook Connect. This conference will be held online on September 16, and Facebook will also provide more information on the company’s vision for Facebook Reality Labs.
So Facebook is slowly getting rid of the Oculus name… and prepare to get a Facebook account for your Oculus Rift S or Oculus Quest. Not to mention, in a week or so, they will force everyone to switch to the new Facebook design on desktop.
