To compete against Xbox’ Smart Delivery, Sony also started to label its games to promote the option for a next-gen upgrade.
We have mentioned several times how Microsoft’s Smart Delivery program will allow you to upgrade your Xbox One title to the Xbox Series version. The solution for the next-gen consoles (which, in Microsoft’s case, also means that you gain access to the Xbox One version as well if you happen to play a game on that console – this is what Smart Delivery stands for) has been showcased, and that’s why many upcoming games mention the possibility of a free upgrade. In Sony’s case, however, we have not seen such a unified marketing move so far.
This is the box art of Immortals: Fenyx Rising for PlayStation 4. We’re not going to talk about the game here, as the new details were discussed the other day. Now, look at the bottom part of it: it says PS5 Upgrade Available. That is far more than what they have previously said (they will „flexibly support the [publisher’s] upgrade plan offered for each title”). Sure, the naming convention is not the brightest, but it is still better than nothing.
Sony possibly pulled this move because of Microsoft, as since the announcement of the Xbox Smart Delivery program, multiple third-party, multiplatform, cross-gen titles announced the free upgrades (Marvel’s Avengers, Cyberpunk 2077, or DIRT 5, to name a few examples). Still, we’re curious to see if Sony Interactive Entertainment’s titles (the PlayStation-exclusive first-party games) will receive the option to be upgraded. The Last of Us Part II was released close to the arrival of the PlayStation 5, and the same can also be said about Ghost of Tsushima.
Sony might not make this move, though, as we also mentioned that they might have cut the PlayStation 5‘s price to be on the same level as the Xbox Series X (and Microsoft was forced to blink first due to leaks).
