The Japanese publisher is likely preparing a new instalment for Virtua Fighter, which, going by its title, is going to focus on eSports.
SEGA announced on Twitter that they are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the company with the announcement of Virtua Fighter x eSports Project. „Virtua Fighter, which was created as the world’s first 3D fighting game in 1993, will restart as an eSports title in celebration of Sega’s 60th anniversary, starting in Japan. Details on the project will be announced in a future update,” SEGA said. The first Virtua Fighter came out in 1993 in arcades, then it was a launch title for SEGA Saturn in ’94 or ’95 depending on the region. The SEGA 32X also got it in ’95 or ’96, and finally, the PC got it in 1996.
But that’s all we know at the moment. There’s a video below, and it is probably a pleasant surprise for the Tokyo Game Show. It’s likely going to be a new title, as the series has last been seen on mobile with two games (Virtua Fighter: Cool Champ – 2011; Virtua Fighter: Fever Combo – 2014).
The series’ final console instalment was in 2012 (Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 – arcade version: 2010), although it was already the fourth version for VF5 (base version – 2006 in arcades, 2007 on PlayStation 3; Virtua Fighter 5 Online – 2007 on Xbox 360, and Virtua Fighter 5 R – 2008 in arcades).
It’s likely a new game, as Virtua Fighter isn’t on the same level in eSports competitions as Tekken, Street Fighter, or Marvel vs. Capcom. It might be a remake of the first game if it’s an anniversary title, but we have no idea. It’s probably going to launch before Tekken x Street Fighter, that’s for sure.
