A survey says that if we compare the PlayStation 5 with the Xbox Series duo, the console already has some advantage in the pre-orders.
According to VGM, a market analyst company, Sony’s console has a bigger pre-order base. The survey was conducted between September 23 and September 25, and 511 US-based respondents participated, representing the United States’ gaming population. (That number feels small. Couldn’t they get more people involved?)
15% of the respondents managed to successfully pre-order a next-generation console (so about 82 people… we told you!), and 72% of this group pre-ordered the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition (the one that has the Blu-ray drive in it), followed by the Xbox Series X (30%), the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (10%), and the Xbox Series S (8%). Adding the numbers, you can see that a few of them have pre-ordered more than one console. 29% of the respondents were trying to pre-order a console but had no luck in doing so. Amongst them, the ratio looks like this: 58% PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, 40% Xbox Series X, 21% PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, 11% Xbox Series S. The sample was divided into three categories (casual, mid-core, and hardcore – 28% of the latter pre-ordered a next-gen console, and 42% had no luck with it).
Those who either got a pre-order in or are planning to get a PlayStation 5 by the end of the year, got asked what games they are interested in. The top three are Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (52%), God of War: Ragnarok (42%), and Final Fantasy XVI (32%). Over at the Xbox side, we have Halo Infinite (45%), Fable (26%) and Forza Motorsport 8 (24%). The non-exclusive games only got two titles named: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (45% – no surprises here), and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla (31%).
45% of the respondents lean towards the PlayStation 5 because of the exclusive titles, while 42% would go for one of the new Xbox models because of the subscription services (such as Game Pass, or the xCloud shortly). And 63% of them don’t even know about Microsoft acquiring Zenimax (with which they got Bethesda and everything belonging to them).
If only they asked more people.
