Perhaps there was a good reason why the next-gen Xbox models are named Xbox Series…
The Xbox will get earlier to the customers (both the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S will debut worldwide on November 10) than the PlayStation 5 (which will debut on November 12 in America and on November 19 in Europe, respectively with both the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition). Neither console said a lot about VR, though, except for the PS5 supporting the 2016 PlayStation VR (although it needs to get a new PlayStation Camera for it!). Microsoft has previously said they might go for AR (augmented reality) instead of VR.
Or maybe not. They could be taking a turn to VR to directly compete against Sony: in Microsoft Flight Simulator‘s source code, the following six lines were found and shared on the game’s forums:
PC_VR
Scarlett_VR
EDITION_DELUXE PublishedPackages_Edition_Deluxe.xml
EDITION_PREMIUM PublishedPackages_Edition_Premium.xml
EDITION_ALLPACKAGES PublishedPackages_Dev.xml
EDITION_SCARLETT PublishedPackages_Scarlett.xml
Microsoft Flight Simulator has a Premium Deluxe version, but not a Premium or a Deluxe one… and the third one on the edition list is reserved for the developers for testing, so that’s not that suspicious. But what about that fourth line? Scarlett? Wasn’t that the internal codename for the Xbox Series? It could have been the Xbox Series X’ codename (but we recall that being Anaconda, with the Xbox Series S running as Lockhart). Whatever the case is that Scarlett_VR line looks ominous to us. It can’t be a random addition. But why did they call it Scarlett? There are technical differences between the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S, so shouldn’t there be two versions?
We should be patient about this, but that Scarlett_VR line seems to be a dead giveaway about Microsoft’s plans.
