The French publisher (which recently has only been in the news with a negative connotation) claims that Beyond Good and Evil 2’s development is progressing nicely.
The game was previously discussed in detail when we talked about Michel Ancel‘s retirement from the video game industry – without him, Rayman‘s character wouldn’t have come to life, and Beyond Good and Evil (which we will shorten to BG&E) also needed him to be created, even though its sequel’s devs called Ancel a dictator. We also mentioned how after Ancel announced his departure, Ubisoft quickly stepped in to tell the fans that there is no need to worry, the game’s development has not come to a grinding halt.
Now, Ubisoft said during its quarterly financial earnings call that they are happy with how Beyond Good and Evil 2’s development is progressing. Yves Guillemot, the French company’s CEO, said that we’ll get to see gameplay of it in 2021 (possibly as part of a Ubisoft Forward broadcast) and that the fans shouldn’t worry whatsoever. Yeah, but we need to add that BG&E 2 has been in development for quite some time, and perhaps it’s slowly time to say when we can expect it. (Remember Avatar’s next game? Ubisoft effectively confirmed it to be available in the April 2022-March 2023 fiscal year, and we know LESS about that!)
Until then, we might even see Netflix’ adaptation launch: there will be a film adaptation of Beyond Good and Evil, directed by Rob Letterman (who was also the director of Detective Pikachu, so he has experience in game-to-film adaptations). It’s going to be a „hybrid live-action/animated feature,” produced by Ubisoft Film and Television (who last produced the Assassin’s Creed film). It’s early to know more about it, though.
We might win the lottery before Beyond Good and Evil 2 is released.
