The company has sold 85% of its physical premises division after losses caused by the coronavirus.
Last Wednesday we learned that Sega Sammy, the parent company of Sega, had sold 85% of its division of arcade rooms and physical premises to another Japanese company, GENDA, due to the losses derived from the coronavirus. Given this news, at 3DJuegos we are talking about a transfer of assets , but some media wrongly reported that this would mean the closure of Sega’s arcades. Something that the company has now denied, who confirms that the salons are not closed : they will continue to operate with the same name as always.
In a statement to Famitsu , the company confirms that its legendary arcades will continue to operate under the Sega name , although they will now be managed by GENDA and not by their own company:
“The existing names will be inherited even after the transfer of assets. The stores will operate under the new management , but we would like to ask users for their continued support. “
As we also indicated yesterday, the sale involves only Sega’s physical stores division , and not the video games and arcade machines division , which operate together. Sega will continue to make arcade machines and games , although with less strategic interest in them now, the company will redeploy its employees to focus more on developing consumer video games.
“The development of entertainment machines [arcades] will continue going forward. The Group will continue to optimize its development resources according to the market environment for each business, such as transferring part of the development staff of entertainment equipment to the business. consumption, which is a growing area . ” Some movements that come as a result of the strong losses registered by Sega this year, given the effect of the coronavirus on its businesses and physical premises.
