Electronic Arts thus confirmed that DICE and Criterion are both concentrating on the next console generation.
We previously wrote about how Electronic Arts skipped the late 2020 window so DICE (who also stopped updating Battlefield V’s live service portion) can concentrate fully on the next-gen Battlefield game. We already knew that it is going to launch in late 2021. Now, the publisher’s newest quarterly financial earnings report (which we won’t discuss in detail, because like everyone else, they are highly reaping profits and have positive outcomes…) confirmed it all.
In the next fiscal year, which will start on April 1, 2021, and end on March 31, 2022, Electronic Arts will launch at least six games for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, including the new Battlefield from DICE and the next Need For Speed from Criterion, respectively. „We plan to launch at least six new games on the next-gen consoles in the fiscal year 2022. These will include a new Need for Speed game that is bringing some astounding visual leaps, developed by the Criterion team, who have launched some of the most highly-rated games in franchise history.
DICE is creating our next Battlefield game with a never-before-seen scale. The technical advancements of the new consoles are allowing the team to deliver on a true next-gen vision for the franchise. We have hands-on play testing underway internally, and the team’s been getting very positive feedback on the game as we’ve begun to engage our community,” Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson said.
We have yet to see how riddled they will be by microtransactions: 2017’s Need For Speed: Payback got a ton of loot boxes, causing a backlash, and while Battlefield was somewhat safe from that, Battlefield V has highly divided the series’ fanbase when it was revealed.
