The fans have put together a significant amount of money to restore a torii.
Ghost of Tsushima, a PlayStation 4-exclusive that launched this summer, gets a lot of positive attention at the end of the year (the last time we talked about the game, it was because Japanese game developers have named Sucker Punch‘s title as the game of the year, which is another Western PlayStation 4-exclusive after 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man), and for a good reason – the medieval Japanese story was incredible, and it also got a free update with a co-op game mode (Legends), which also got several PlayStation-related costumes.
However, Ghost of Tsushima, which is set on Tsushima Island, was successful for another reason, too, Famitsu reports. A typhoon has hit the island in September, and it destroyed the Watatsumi Shrine’s Heisei Otorii. The torii could be familiar for the players, as Sucker Punch’s game includes the Shinto shrines, and the torii-s (which are traditional gates) are part of them. Yuichi Hirayama, a local shrine priest, started a crowdfunding page for restoring the torii on Campfire, and he requested five million JPY (more than 48 thousand dollars) to help restore the torii. It might be a lot, but it’s not a simple task.
The fans chimed in, and they have done so with a lot of cash. There are still 16 days left in the campaign, but the campaign now stands at 20.8 million JPY! Hirayama has updated the page to note, „We have received a great deal of support from the players of the Ghost of Tsushima game set in Tsushima, and I feel that it is God’s guidance.”
It’s heartwarming to see the fans of a game step up and help with real-life tasks. The game sold more than five million copies in four months, so the fanbase is fairly strong.
