Steam kept a few surprises for us this year as well.
Gabe Newell’s digital store has the usual end-of-the-year top lists, but there are six categories at the moment: Top Sellers, New Releases, Most Played, Early Access Grads, Best of VR, and Controller Games. Unfortunately, Valve gives these lists out of order, which means we don’t know which game was the top seller. However, with this random listing, we still know which games were the top 12, then 13-24th, 25th-40th, and 41st-100th.
Here are the twelve top sellers for the year, measured by the gross revenue: Dota 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, Doom Eternal, Monster Hunter World, Rainbow Six: Siege, Destiny 2, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Among Us. There aren’t big surprises to be seen here (Grand Theft Auto V sells like bread, DotA 2 provides money to Valve even as a free-to-play game, etc), but it surprised us how Capcom’s Monster Hunter World, which is almost three years old, managed to outperform Mount & Blade 2 and Crusader Kings 3 (which are in the 13th-24th list).
Here are the eleven most played games. They have had to reach over 200 thousand concurrent players to be in this list: Dota 2, Among Us, Terraria, Cyberpunk 2077, Life is Strange 2, Monster Hunter World, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, Destiny 2, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, we see familiar names.
2020 is nearing the end, and it was a significant change for many people. However, we are curious to see how the 2021 list will change. (For example, we still expect Grand Theft Auto V to be up there next year as well.)
