Hideki Kamiya and Atsushi Inaba, two founders of PlatinumGames, claim that even though Sony‘s priorities (and mindset…) changed, the Japanese developers won’t immediately ignore the PlayStation 5.
Things could change, two: Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Americanization can be noticed via two things. One, Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of SIE, moved its headquarters from Japan to the US (California state), and two, Sony broke the 25-year tradition by swapping the PlayStation 5’s UI’s button layout to the Western one (previously, X was used to cancel/deny things, while the Circle was to approve/OK in menus).
„I do understand that the console industry in Japan is not what it used to be and when that happens the priorities of these big console makers will change, and that makes perfect sense to me. I don’t know if this is an opinion that’s out there, and I don’t have any personal investment, but just because PlayStation is from Japan doesn’t mean it should focus on the Japanese market. I don’t feel that way. At the same time, I don’t think it’s American now either: I think it’s international and doesn’t belong to any country. That’s how I feel as a developer,” Inaba told VGC in an interview that we previously quoted for a different reason.
„I don’t think […] Japan is going to break away – I don’t see that. I don’t see a shunning of Sony from the Japanese makers at all. And really, it’s so hard to get a PlayStation 5 right now that I feel we don’t have enough accurate data on how it will ultimately fare in Japan yet,” Kamiya added. (He did get a PlayStation 5 from the first units…)
PlatinumGames is currently developing Babylon’s Fall for PlayStation 4 and PC, to be published by Square Enix, but we wouldn’t be surprised if its development has shifted to the PlayStation 5. We haven’t seen much of this game, but it was still more than the Nintendo Switch-exclusive Bayonetta 3 that is also in the works…
