Hiroki Totoki, the chief financial officer of Sony Group, believes that the PlayStation 5 (PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition) is forecasted to have more supply issues that should last into 2022. After Sony Group announced its latest financial results, Hiroki informed analysts in a private briefing, and as expected, he used some financial talk to depict the situation.
„I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand. We have sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily,” Totoki said at the briefing, according to several people who attended and relayed the information to Bloomberg.
And don’t forget that the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X (and, technically the Xbox Series S as well) are both built around similar technology, featuring AMD’s APU (including a CPU and a GPU „under the same roof”). Because of it, we doubt that Microsoft isn’t in the same shoes as Sony is. However, unlike Sony, Microsoft might have a smaller demand, which is why you might Xbox Series units laying around in stores for sale despite possibly having the same number of units manufactured.
Since its November 12 launch, the PlayStation 5 shipped 7.8 million units by the end of March. For the current fiscal year that started on April 1, Sony expects 14.8 million units to be shipped to stores. We can’t imagine what the expectation would be without the lack of components…
