The head of Bethesda Game Studios is currently working on Starfield, but now he got a chance, thanks to Bethesda.
Todd Howard was interviewed by The Telegraph, and this topic was mentioned for a good reason. It was a massive surprise for LucasFilm Games to be revived, let alone it immediately starting to hand out IP rights. For instance, Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment will be doing a Star Wars game (but for now, they are developing the Avatar), and MachineGames also got the rights to develop something, featuring the whip-holding explorer.
„I think I originally pitched [Indiana Jones to] Lucas[Film Games] in 2009 and I’ve been trying to find a way to make that since. I think the work MachineGames have done, they’re just phenomenal developers and storytellers. And when I started talking to them about it, it was a good fit. And we got the opportunity to talk to Lucas[Film Games] and Disney about it and they were super excited.
I like Indiana Jones but never thought I’d have the opportunity to make a game. And you’ll hear about more of that in the future. But the team at MachineGames are the best team in the world to pull this game off and they’re doing a phenomenal job,” Howard said. Let’s not forget about MachineGames also working on Wolfenstein III.
Howard also mentioned The Elder Scrolls VI, which was announced in 2018: „The [new Starfield] technology, Creation Engine 2, is sort of built for both. It’s like a new tech base. The vast majority of our development work is on Starfield right now but everybody works on everything so the projects kind of intertwine. It’s good to think of The Elder Scrolls VI as still being in a design [phase].
We’re checking the tech: ‘Is this going to handle the things we want to do in that game?’ Every game will have some new suites of technology so Elder Scrolls 6 will have some additions on to Creation Engine 2 that that game is going to require,” Howard added. So the engine might need even more work to realize his vision!
At least his dream will now come true.
