Sony is going to make a new PlayStation VR, that is certain. However, officially, the technical details are still under wraps…
A YouTube channel called PSVR without Borders was the one to break the details below regarding the next-gen PlayStation VR headset. Allegedly, the person has heard all the details via a developer summit that Sony has held this summer.
Going by the channel, the PlayStation VR 2 would come with Fresnel OLED displays, with a 2000×2040 resolution per eye (a total of 4000×2040) and a 110° FOV (field of view) and HDR. It would also have FSR (Flexible Scaling Resolution), Foveated Rendering, and eye-tracking. These would let the headset scale the resolution based on our view, and with this method, the performance would get a boost by dumbing down the visual quality of the regions of the game which we don’t see. Haptics would be used to improve immersion and reduce motion sickness.
The channel added that Sony also revealed some new details on the new controller. The new controller will feature capacitative touch sensors, which is a further detail, unlike the haptics and adaptive triggers that have been confirmed earlier this year. (These ideas were taken from the DualSense, but those were great additions.) The company is trying to move away from the currently available VR experiences to focus on AAA titles that can be played with or without VR. Some of the current PlayStation VR titles could be remastered for the new model.
Sony will talk about the PlayStation VR 2‘s release plans early next year, so possibly during the October-December fiscal quarter’s earnings report. The headset will not launch in 2021, which makes sense, as Sony is now bolstering the PlayStation 5’s stock.
Keep in mind that none of this is official at the moment.
