PlayStation 5: A New FromSoftware Game? A Return Of An Older Franchise?

The original developers of Demon’s Souls, FromSoftware (since the remake was made by the now defunct Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Studio, with the help of Bluepoint Games, which will most likely officially join SIE soon…) may be on to something again.

Shpeshal Nick (whose name we always mess up when we type it for the first time…), the co-founder of the Xbox Era podcast, wrote the following on Twitter: “Mother f__k. My rumour mill got screwed again.” He quote tweeted another user that beat him to the punch: the other tweet mentioned a possible new State of Play broadcast around August 19 (one week from now), including the announcement of a new PlayStation 5-exclusive by FromSoftware. However, it isn’t a Bloodborne sequel. (And the purchase of Bluepoint might be announced during this broadcast, too.)

Then, there’s the other tweet from Nick: “You know what? Screw it. I’ll risk pissing someone off. I don’t want to get scooped again. I’ve been told Wipeout is coming back. [It’s] planned to be a PlayStation 5/PlayStation VR 2, most likely an XDEV project. [It’s] still early in the project.” The latest entry in the series (not a new title, just a collection), Wipeout Omega Collection, had PlayStation VR support added in a patch after the launch. And the new PlayStation VR has no name yet. XDev is effectively a European effort for indie developers on PlayStation.

Neither project has been confirmed yet. Wipeout (or WipEout, or wipE’out”) was a classic on the first PlayStation, bringing us to the question: why on Earth wasn’t any Wipeout game part of the flopping PlayStation Classic lineup? After all, this IP is Sony’s! (And the mini-console did indeed flop: after just mere weeks, its price has been slashed significantly… it had issues, let’s leave it at that.)
