It seems reasonable for some gullible retired women when Keanu Reeves seeks them out on Instagram, looking for companionship and some cash.
What can one look for in a mate? A sweet-hearted dream boyfriend? A man who makes the papers every two weeks for his good deeds? How about a man who’s been on the cover of magazines for every age from Tiger Beat to GQ? What about poor lonely Keanu Reeves? Will he do the same? Of course, he will!
It seems that lonely and penniless “Keanu Reeves” is looking for the love of his life on the internet, and he has a type. He’s looking for a wealthy older woman to accompany him to Hollywood events; if only they could pay their entrance fee of $2,000, he’d pick her up at the Los Angeles airport. What a gentleman!
The LA Times recently interviewed a woman named Molli Hermiston, whose poor aunt fell victim to the scam and still thinks she and Mr Reeves are a couple (The aunt declined to comment for this story). Hermiston’s aunt is in the process of selling her home in Little Rock, Arkansas, to move to Los Angeles with the star of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures. The fake Reeves sent her jewellery, including a necklace and some earrings that she wears every day. The fake Reeves also asked her aunt to forward $10,000; no word yet on whether she sent the money.
To see how the scam worked, Hermiston set up the fake rich older woman’s account and started following Keanu fan sites, and “very quickly had five different people contacting me online saying they were Keanu Reeves,” he said. One scammer, Johnny Utah, wanted to switch to Google Hangouts, “For my profession and career, I want to keep this between us”. They then started “asking questions that could reveal the victim’s wealth and status, or that could be part of a bank’s security queries to confirm the customer’s identity”. A fake Neo was suggesting a Bitcoin transaction followed at the end. So romantic!
Look, we all get it. Everyone knows Keanu. He loves animals. He’s multi-talented. We’re all waiting for Keanu to reach out and invite us to join him. You don’t have to think that you’re not Keanu’s type, and that’s why he won’t make you an offer – if you believe in fairy tales.
What is worth knowing is that Keanu has been in a relationship with artist Alexandra Grant, who illustrated his books ‘Ode To Happiness‘ and ‘Shadows‘, for about three years and co-founded X Artists’ Books with him. He is one of Hollywood’s highest-earning actresses. So he’s more than likely not poor, not lonely… But even if he were, he’d never ask you for your PayPal code… (but if you meet Steven Seagal, he might ask you for something: ID, registration, driver’s license… or worse, to put your hand on the hood of the car – ed.)
